Hey canoeer, put a net in the sea. Look for the fish. Hit the oar. Pull rope. Harvest the net. Hey canoeman, pull the sea net”. The performance is by the Duque de Caxias Youth Symphony Orchestra, formed by students from public schools in Rio. The show will also be broadcast live on Youtube and not Facebook.

THE Opera Caymar is an unprecedented musical, with works by Dorival Caymmi, inspired by the characters that populate the songs of the renowned singer, composer and painter. The story is full of conflicts and passions and takes place in the village of Caymmar, where fisherwoman Jana and her brother, businessman Gusmão, need to resolve their differences after the tragic death of their parents. The direction is by Jay Vaquer and the text by Ana Gabriela Dickstein.

The show is the result of the Geração de Sons project, an educational work for musical training aimed at public school students of the Brazilian Institute of Music and Education (IBME).

“We spent two very challenging years [de pandemia] and I wanted to bring a reflection about our life, about the joy of living, and we are bringing the network. The Caymmi brings your memories, your memories, from the bottom of the sea. And we want to bring that, affective memories, of joy, of art, of the culture of our diversity. It’s a network musical and we’re going to bring good things from the bottom of our souls on the network,” says the musical’s creator and orchestra director, Moana Maia.

Dorival Caymmi was born in Salvador, in 1914, and became one of the main figures in Brazilian popular music. He died in 2008 in Rio of January. To write the show, Ana Gabriela immersed herself in the artist’s work. “He has a very diversified and very interesting trajectory, because he has passed through several Brazilian cities. It has a very deep relationship with Brazil and, at the same time, it took and raised the name of the country internationally. It has a very rich trajectory and a huge, very varied repertoire, which goes far beyond beach songs”, she says.

Included in the repertoire are songs such as Samba from my land, Marina, Fisherman’s Suite and maracangalha. Singer and songwriter Danilo Caymmi, son of Dorival, will participate in the show.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring young people closer to this music, and they’re really enjoying it,” says Moana. Despite the challenge of executing the works, which are complex, she says that the students are having fun. “I was at rehearsals and saw the boys having a great time. The song ends and they laugh, laugh, it’s a playful mood. I think people will see this tomorrow. I had so much fun”.

THE Opera Caymar will be presented this Thursday at 7pm, at Teatro da Caixa. Tickets cost R$ 2. The presentation features actors and singers Fabiano Leandro, Ju Marins, Yasmin Tozzi and Fernando Leão; with special participation of Danilo Caymmi. The songs are performed by the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Duque de Caxias, conducted by Vinícius Louzada. Sponsored by Caixa.
