“North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea,” Seoul’s joint chiefs of staff said in a statement, referring to the waters better known as the Sea of Japan.
Japan’s coast guard also confirmed the possible launch of a ballistic missile, citing information from Japan’s Defense Ministry, and warned ships to be vigilant.
The North Korean launch is part of a record number of weapons tests this year.
US Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Thursday for a visit during which she will go to the border between North and South Korea.
