The 35th edition of the mining summit perumin includes for the first time the world’s leading strategic energy management company, Aggreko, which enables companies to access renewable energy to generate greater operational efficiency, cost savings and reduction of environmental impact.
At an international level, the company advises, supplies and manages the installation of mobile and modular electric generators in the mining, oil, gas and electric generating or distributing concessions sectors, and in Peru the company focuses on the mining and electric concessions sector, although He is also aware of the great potential of oil and gas from the northern jungle.
According to Miguel Rubini, Aggreko’s Business Development Manager for Peru and Bolivia, in a mining unit connected to the electricity grid, energy represents between 5% and 10% of the total cost of production, while in a mining unit outside the network, this can be up to three or four times more.
“This is where Aggreko’s mixed services come in, and the savings range from 30% to 50% of the original cost. Thus we can observe in an electricity concession project in which renewable penetration is 56.2% and that will stop emitting 110,000t of CO2 during its 20-year contract period”explains the executive.

Within Aggreko’s offering, the decarbonization pathways that have most attracted mining companies are hybrid power plants, virtual gas pipelines and renewable energy systems.
“Mining companies can also partner with us for the long term, without having to commit to the exclusive use of one type of fuel as an energy source. The type of fuel can be changed according to the needs of the project and new technologies can also be introduced as they become viable”Rubini emphasizes.
Aggreko has positioned itself in three major focuses in the mining sector: generation for projects outside the electricity grid (off-grid), which migrate from thermal to a hybrid model, support for projects within the electricity grid (on- grid) by generating backup; and greenfield projects, which are starting construction and need to obtain electricity supply through a strategic partner. Each project is evaluated by the company in order to know if they can access a one hundred percent renewable solution or a hybrid one.
The British company has carried out work for MMG/Las Bambas between 2014 and 2015, in which it concentrated on the assembly of three electric shovels and supplied around 20MW for the assembly and commissioning of the equipment during its construction stage. Later they established another contract for the supply service, adding 8MW more.
The company also worked with Anglo American Quellaveco, generating 6MW for a water pumping facility. It has then worked with off-grid mining companies providing pure thermal generation services and is currently evaluating mixed solutions for this category that mix thermal, solar and energy storage.
“Our objective is to promote and publicize the benefits of hybrid solutions, mixes between thermal and solar generation, depending on the needs of each client, with an emphasis on growing the renewable energy unit.”, he details.
Aggreko has its own net zero emission targets for 2050 and aims to reduce the use of diesel in its customer solutions by 50% by 2030.
