Israel records another record of Covid-19 infections

Israel announced on Wednesday that it had registered almost 12,000 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, a new high since the start of the pandemic.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 11,978 new cases have been recorded since Tuesday, surpassing the 11,344 infections on September 2, 2021.

In total, some 60,000 people have currently tested positive for COVID in Israel, but only 125 are in serious condition, according to the ministry.

In a country of 9.4 million people, about 4.3 million have received a booster dose of the anticovid vaccine. And authorities have begun giving a fourth dose to immunosuppressed people.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that infections “were increasing”, and estimated that the country would register “tens of thousands of new cases in the coming days.”

“The good news is that vaccines are effective,” he insisted, during a visit to a hospital in central Israel. “Vaccinated and masked people are unlikely to get a severe form of the disease.”

In total, since the start of the pandemic, Israel has registered 1.4 million infections and 8,247 deaths, according to official data.
