This Monday, September 26, the National Political Table of the Broad Front met, and one of the central issues analyzed by the left-wing political leadership was the detention and incommunicado detention of the head of Presidential Security, Alejandro Astesiano, for allegedly falsifying Russian passports. ; and the subsequent press conference given by the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, who expressed his surprise at the event, and said that he does not give the most precious thing he has, which is his family’s safety, to someone who could have indications of acting outside the law.
lack of government clarity
After the meeting of the Political Bureau of the FA, Pereira stated that the left has very diverse concerns, due to the government’s lack of clarity.
“There is an evident lack of clarity and coordination, because neither more nor less than the security of the President of the Republic was in the hands of a person who had more than 20 inquiries. He is now being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office, for the possible issuance of false Russian passports. That person cannot be an impeccable official,” Pereira said.
According to documents that became known in the last few hours, Astesiano has had twenty police investigations since 2003, for different crimes, such as: theft, fraud, damage and misappropriation, but without a criminal record.
Pereira said that in the face of such a lack of clarity, “the Executive Power and the government have the obligation to clarify the facts that, clearly, are very confusing for Uruguayan society. Transparency is required, which is lacking”.
“The lack of coordination occurs next to our president. What is Intelligence doing? How do they take care of the president and the State, if the head of security of the Presidency has problems with the law? ”, He questioned.
He added that President Lacalle’s statements at Monday’s press conference “were neither clear nor correct, because the Astesian official did not fulfill his task with exemplary standards.”
On the other hand, he referred to the espionage complaint made by Police Intelligence number three against journalist Gabriel Pereyra. “There is no clarity on this issue either.”
“But there is a lack of clarity when the police union says that there are wiretaps, or when a passport was granted to drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, who was detained in Dubai for having a false Paraguayan passport,” he remarked.
The Broad Front caucus made a request for reports on the situation of the journalist Gabriel Pereyra; and will make another request for information on the Astesiano case.
