The president of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Maria del Carmen Alvaquestioned whether the Government had arranged for the Peru reestablish international relations with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is a state with limited recognition.
During this Monday’s session, in which Foreign Minister César Landa was presented, Alva Prieto said that the aforementioned country was only made up of “40 tents” that occupied the territory of Algeria, so it was not justified for Peru to establish relations with that country.
“The Foreign Ministry is not painted, the Foreign Ministry is the one that gives the guidelines, because the president is not that he knows international law and we all know that the Saharawi Republic is 40 tents in a territory of Algeria and that it is not recognized by the United Nations and that of the 24 Arab countries it is only recognized by one, nobody recognizes it”, he stated.
“What is the reason why Peru recognizes the 40 tents in a territory? Because we know of people who have been there and have seen the 40 tents”, he added.
The presence of Landa Arroyo in the working group was given to explain the reasons why Peru had established relations with the Saharawi Republic, among other issues.
In his response, the head of the Foreign Relations sector said that Peru respects the right to self-determination of peoples and is in favor of the “decolonization” policy promoted by the United Nations, for which it recognized the Saharawi Republic.
It should be noted that, during his last trip to the United States, within the framework of his participation in the United Nations Assembly, President Pedro Castillo met with a representative of said country.
