Sixth perceptible earthquake of the year recorded in eastern Cuba

The National Center for Seismological Research of Cuba Registration This Saturday an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 in the eastern province of Granma, without human or material damage so far.

The epicenter was located at a depth of 35.4 kilometers and was noticeable around four in the afternoon in various localities in the municipality of Niquero, to the southwest of that eastern region.

The report of the national entity, published on its website, specifies that this is the sixth perceptible tremor so far this year, and the last since August 28, with a magnitude of 3.4 in the cities of Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, in the east of Cuba.

Last year, 20 earthquakes were reported in Cuba, most of them in the eastern region of the island, the most active area in the country.

Cuba is located in a region, from the Dominican Republic to Mexico, where different tectonic fault systems converge and has significant seismic activity.

In recent years, the number of perceptible earthquakes in Cuba has fluctuated from a peak of 61 in 2016 to six in 2019, although the annual average between 2014 and 2021 (except for the 2016 and 2019 calculation) is 18 perceptible, according to specialists. .
