More than 200 flights were canceled on Sunday in the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands due to torrential rains and strong gusts of wind caused by tropical storm Herminia, announced the manager of Spanish airports (Aena).

According to Aena, a total of 215 flights to or from this archipelago located in the Atlantic, opposite Morocco, had been cancelled, while another 25 were diverted.

The cancellations mainly affected routes of the regional company Binter and the national Iberia, as well as some of international airlines.

The storm Hermione, which has been hitting the islands since Saturday, has led the authorities to put the entire archipelago on alert.

According to the Spanish meteorological agency (Aemet), there have been Record rainfall levels for a month of September at several stations in the area, especially on the island of Tenerife.

According to the Aemet, the heavy rains will continue until Monday.
