Havana Cuba. — The activist and former political prisoner Eduardo Díaz Fleitas denounced the evasions and bureaucratic obstacles of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and the Provincial Directorate of Jails and Prisons of Pinar del Río in the case of the opponent Alexander Diaz Rodriguezheld in the Kilo 5 ½ prison.
Díaz Fleitas declared to CubaNet that the prison authorities of that unit have also repeatedly prevented the political prisoner from receiving essential supplies and provisions, including a bucket and a gallon for drinking water, bathing and other necessities.
The complainant reports that on September 12, both he and Fidel León Muñoz, a member of the Pinareña Democratic Alliance, appeared at the Kilo 5 ½ prison and for the second time the military blocked the delivery of food supplies to Díaz Rodríguez.
They also allege that this is a situation that makes the inmate vulnerable, since the prison’s water —which comes from a dam— is of poor quality and is served by tanker trucks, so the prisoners need pots to collect it.
Two weeks earlier, after the first refusal from the prison, León Muñoz himself had appeared at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, where a prosecutor named Idael had directed him to return to prison, assuring that they had the right to make the delivery and that, in turn, in prison they were obliged to accept the articles because it was a prisoner’s right.
Díaz Fleitas points out that this second attempt provoked an argument with the head of the prison, a major who rudely snapped at them that “there was no bag or visit and that they were not relatives of the prisoner.”
Given the intransigence of the officer, the activists went to the Provincial Directorate of Jails and Prisons of Pinar del Río, where they unsuccessfully tried to approach a lieutenant colonel who identifies himself as Rodolfito.
Subsequently, the opponents returned to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, where they were received on that occasion by an official and another prosecutor. The latter, instead of giving them a written order, instructed them to go to the National Directorate of Jails and Prisons, located in the Havana neighborhood of Vedado, to see if they would get an answer there about the case of Alexander Díaz Rodríguez.
