Port-au-Prince, (EFE) – The United Nations Organization (UN) condemned this Saturday the violence in Haitimired in an unprecedented socio-political and economic crisis.

“The UN in Haiti condemns the violence that the country has witnessed in recent weeks and asks all actors to work together to calm the situation and guarantee a return to calm,” reads a statement from the agency.

The UN It stated that it is “closely monitoring the situation” and that it is prepared to “deploy emergency humanitarian support if humanitarian needs increase.”

He pointed out that his priority in the most impoverished country in America is to continue fulfilling his mandate and support the people and the Government.

All this, “in a context in which Haitians currently face persistent insecurity and uncertainty in the capital.”

He also assured that his key personnel will remain in the country to support “stability and security” efforts and to carry out life-saving interventions.

“These activities also include those aimed at providing support to the population facing the situation,” says the UN.

Haiti has experienced a week of strong tensions with demonstrations and looting of private, public and humanitarian institutions shortly after Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced an increase in fuel prices in the local market.

Immersed for years in a sociopolitical and economic crisis, Haiti saw its situation worsen even more after the assassination in July of last year of then President Jovenel Moïse.

Added to this is the battle waged by armed gangs in and around Port-au-Prince, which has already caused the death of at least 300 people and the flight of some 3,000 from the capital area.
