Six years since the raid on Cubalex headquarters in Havana

MIAMI, United States. – The non-governmental organization Cubalex recalled this Friday on social networks the sixth anniversary of the trespassing by the political police from its headquarters in Havana, a fact that represented the beginning of the end of the direct work of several of its members within the Island.

“At this time 6 years ago they raided our headquarters in Havana. At that moment a nightmare began that took us into exile without the possibility of being able to return, together with our families. Despite this, we did not let them exterminate the work that we did, that we do,” the NGO said in its Twitter account. Twitter.

On September 24, 2016, agents from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) and officials from other state entities forced their way into the house that served as the headquarters of Cubalex to carry out an exhaustive search that culminated in the arrest of members of the organization.

That day, the official Beatriz Peña de la O, from the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic, and Lieutenant Colonel Juan Carlos Delgado Casanova, instructor of the Criminal Investigation and Operations Division of the MININT, entered the building.

After an hour of investigation, the regime’s agents confiscated five desktop computers including a server, four laptops, three laser printers, seven mobile phones, security cameras, as well as the files of 300 cases handled by the legal advisory office.

It should be noted that Cubalex had the official protection of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which requested the Cuban State on April 22, 2015 to adopt the necessary measures to preserve the life and personal integrity of the members of the NGO. , through precautionary measure number 96-15.

On that occasion, the IACHR demanded that Cubalex activists be allowed to carry out their work without being harassed.

Despite the persecution of the Cuban dictatorship against independent civil society, Cubalex has continued to work to establish democracy, the rule of law and guarantees of respect for human rights in Cuba through monitoring, reporting and denouncing violations in the Island.

The organization also provides direct and confidential assistance and free legal advice to people in the Caribbean country, contributing to the training of human rights defenders. H H. and the promotion of civic and legal culture among the population.

Likewise, the NGO uses its experience and national and international laws to promote reforms to the legal system on the Island.
