MIAMI, United States. — Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel continues to call on public opinion in Cuba to vote Yes for the Family Codewhich will be submitted to a popular referendum next Sunday.
In a meeting held at the Palace of the Revolution with representatives of various sectors related to the ruling party, Raúl Castro’s successor addressed several issues about the bill, which has generated divisions between Cubans inside and outside the Island.
According to Díaz-Canel, the Family Code is “a monumental work, due to the amount of knowledge and experiences that make it up.”
He also assured that it is an initiative of “a wonderful singularity”, because “it turned love into law, affection into law”.
“We are on the eve of participating in a civic act of enormous responsibility, which we will attend with every right, but also with a sense of duty and civic and social responsibility,” added the president in one of his speeches.
Among those present at the meeting —reported by the island’s state press— were Mariela Castro, daughter of Raúl Castro and director of the National Center for Sex Education (Cenesex), pro-government activist Francisco Rodríguez Cruz, boxer Julio César La Cruz, double Olympic champion, among others.
Mariela Castro, for many the “ideologue” of the Family Code, said she was sure that the bill’s approval will be “a milestone in the history of the Revolution, and that many countries will later be inspired by Cuba, for its democratic exercise of transparency”.
The meeting was also attended by the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party and head of its Ideological Department, Rogelio Polanco Fuentes; as well as the Minister of Justice, Oscar Silvera Martínez.
