Mexico presents to the Vatican the initiative to stop the Russia-Ukraine conflict

“The goal of this Caucus would be to serve as a diplomatic channel to engage with both the Russian Federation and Ukraine, with a view to building confidence-building measures, de-escalating tensions, and negotiating a ceasefire that could lead to a truce, opening thus a path for dialogue towards the fundamental objective of achieving a sustainable peace agreement”, says the document presented by Foreign Relations.

“Needless to say, this is easier said than done. Mexico is fully aware that the precondition for any successful mediation effort is the political will of the parties and we are aware that tensions continue to rise,” she adds.

The Mexican authorities were convinced that it is the duty of all members of the United Nations to exhaust all diplomatic efforts for a peaceful settlement of conflicts.

“Indifference is unacceptable. It is precisely in difficult times like these that our resilience is tested.

“We cannot and must not give in to despair. This initiative is now at the mercy of the political will of the parties. We hope that it will lead to a new chapter in this conflict, governed by diplomacy and political dialogue, for the good of the peoples of the world who continue to suffer the scourge of war and to whom we will always be responsible for our actions and our omissions” , Add.

Yesterday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard brought before the General Assembly of the United Nations the proposal of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In an 11-minute speech, the Mexican diplomat stated that given the paralysis of the UN Security Council, all the countries of the world must offer a diplomatic channel for the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposal consists of establishing a Committee for Dialogue and Peace, which would be made up of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi; Pope Francis and the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres.
