With the presence of the incumbent President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón, a commemorative act was held this Friday the 23rd of the 172 years since the death of José Artigas, in Sauce, Canelones.
On the occasion, Argimón placed a floral offering at the foot of the monument to the national hero and later members of the Río de la Plata Historical Institute discovered a commemorative plaque in the Sagrada Familia church.
Also present were the director of Culture of the Municipality of Canelones, Sergio Machina; the mayor of Sauce, Reina Rey; the president of the Patriotic and Events Commission of that town, Carolina Noria; police and military authorities, and students and officials of Liceo No. 1.
Rey referred to the responsibility and honor of remembering the figure of José Gervasio Artigas in “these lands”. He added that children and young people are the banner of the future and of the artiguist ideology, and adults, in turn, are responsible for that flame to continue alive and more valid than ever.
