On social media, some users have expressed concern about the lights that were seen in the sky after the strong earthquake that hit to Mexico in recent days, however science has studied the phenomenon and although there is no exact answer, some have emerged hypothesis that can explain this rare occurrence.

Last Monday, September 19, 2022, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 hit Mexico leaving about 1,200 replicas, the strongest reached a magnitude of 6.9 leaving two people dead.

Additionally, the earthquakes were accompanied by strange lights in the sky that sowed fear in the inhabitants of the cities where these phenomena could be observed, such as Los Reyes, Acaquilpan in the state of Mexico.

Some of the comments that were seen on social networks were scary, however, some users went further and launched an explanation for what happened; “it is the reflection of the short circuit made by the cables in the street or when a transformer explodes”, A user commented on one of the published videos while another user commented that “it is the energy that the earthquake released.”

According to him United States Geological Survey, It is a phenomenon known as earthquake lights and manifests as lightning or balls of light while an earthquake or earthquake occurs.

The first time this phenomenon was reported was in Japan in the year 869 where after an earthquake these lights appeared in the sky.

One of the hypotheses about the lights is that during the movement of tectonic plates containing quartz, an electric field is formed that ends up producing these lights.

On the other hand, one of the most widely agreed hypotheses was published by a group of geologists in the journal Seismological Research Letters and it consists in that the earthquake lights are produced near the cracks, because the “subservical faults” allow the electrical currents due to the tension to flow quickly to the outside.
