The unemployment rate in August stood at 7.9%, some 141,000 people

This Wednesday, September 21, the INE presented its monthly report on the labor market. According to the study, in August 2022 for the country as a whole, the activity rate stood at 61.5%, the employment rate at 56.6% and the unemployment rate at 7.9%.

In Montevideo unemployment was 7.6%, while in the interior it was 8.2%.

The assets are 1.78530 people, the employed 1.64360, and the unemployed 141,000 people.

Evolution in the year

According to official data, throughout the year unemployment was as follows: Last July the unemployment rate stood at 8.1%, in June 8.4% (the highest value so far this year ), in May it was 8.1%, in April and March it was 7.7%, in February 7.3 and in January 7.4%.

On the other hand, when observing the characteristics of employed people, it is estimated that 8.5% are underemployed, while non-registration with social security due to their main job stands at 21%.

Any person who during the reference period considered (last week) is not working due to not having a job, who is actively looking for a job and is available to start working right now, is considered unemployed. By definition, unemployed people are also those who are not looking for work because they are awaiting the results of steps already taken and those who start working in the next 30 days.
