Miguel Mendoza submits to a hunger strike to be authorized to see his daughter

Relatives of political prisoner Miguel Mendoza are concerned about his state of health, which could worsen with the start of a hunger strike to pressure the Nicaraguan regime to allow him to see his daughter Alejandra.

Through a press conference, his relatives read a statement denouncing that for 15 months Mendoza “has not been able to see his eight-year-old daughter Alejandra. Despite being a strong man with an incredible emotional state, those of us who know him know how to read in the brightness of his eyes, the anguish caused by knowing how badly his daughter is going through it. For this reason, on that last occasion, Miguel has stated that, if he was not allowed to see the girl before September 19, he would start a hunger strike, until he is allowed to meet Alejandra again, “says the document.

“Miguel is a chronic patient and has lost more than 30 pounds. So this measure puts his health and life at risk. And although Miguel is aware of the risks, he considers that it is the only way out that they have left him in his attempts to hug his daughter again, after these 457 days that are equivalent to more than ten thousand nine hundred hours without hugging his little girl» , add the relatives of the political prisoner.

His relatives point out that his lawyer has filed eleven requests so that the sports journalist can see his girl, “which is a right for both of them, and not a single response has been obtained.”

Mendoza is one of the political prisoners denied the right to see and communicate with his daughter by the Ortega-Murillo regime. The relatives of the prisoner of conscience have requested in different ways that the slightest communication between Miguel and his daughter be authorized, however, the Ortega administration has denied this demand.

The journalist was arrested at his home on June 21, 2021. The regime imprisoned the sports writer for allegedly “conspiring to undermine national integrity” and “spreading false news.” He was sentenced to nine years in prison. In addition, he was disqualified from holding public office.

The first and only time that the Ortega regime showed Miguel Mendoza, the journalist looked thin, emaciated, like the other 26 political prisoners locked up in “El Nuevo Chipote”, but he always kept his head held high.

His family demands that he be released, since “not a single crime has been proven, for which he is imprisoned as a result of an action inconsistent with the principles and articles set forth in the constitutional precepts of Nicaragua. We also demand that you refrain from continuing to take away Alejandra’s right to see her father, who is a model of honesty and patriotism for her and the rest of her family, “the statement ends.
