«Nothing more hypocritical than the speech to save the jungle. The forest burns, gentlemen, while you wage war and play with it»; without ‘hypocrisy’: it was a phrase of the Colombian president.
Colombia News.
For no more than 20 minutes, in a direct and pedagogical way, this was the speech of Colombian President Gustavo Petro before the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations.
It was a speech that for many has been classified as hard and strong.
Focusing mainly on climate change, the protection of the Amazon rainforest and the failed fight against drugs: “Forty years the war on drugs has lasted,” he said.
Petro began by stating that he came from one of the three most beautiful countries on earth:
- “I come from the land of yellow butterflies and magic. There in the mountains and valleys of all greens, not only the abundant waters go down, but also the torrents of blood”.
- “My country is beautiful because it has the Amazon Jungle, the Chocó Jungle, the waters, the Andes mountain ranges, and the oceans.”

Cataloging as paradoxical that «the forest that is trying to be saved is at the same time destroyed».
The president specified that for the great powers “to destroy the jungle, the Amazon, has become the slogan followed by states and businessmen.”
The foregoing without “important the cry of scientists baptizing the Jungle as one of the great climatic pillars.”
“The jungle, the climatic pillar of the world, disappears with all its life, the great sponge that absorbs the planetary CO2, evaporates; This jungle is seen in my country as the great enemy to defeat”: President @petrogustavo on the @A. #ColombiaInTheUN ????#UNGA pic.twitter.com/xebPcfDlHL

Failed fight against drugs
He was emphatic in specifying that the fight against drugs continues to be unsuccessful, “the war on drugs has lasted 40 years, if we do not correct course and it continues for another 40 years, the United States will see 2,800,000 young people die of overdoses from fentanyl, which is not produced in our Latin America ”.
- “Deadly consumption has increased, from soft drugs to harder drugs, a genocide has occurred on my continent and in my country, millions of people have been sentenced to prison, to hide their own social guilt they have cast the blame the Jungle and its plants. They have filled speeches and policies with no reason,” he added.
