They present a bill to extend partial unemployment insurance in three tourist sectors

Government will exempt companies linked to tourism from employer contributions

The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, reported that the partial unemployment insurance for restaurants, hotels and bars, commerce and transportation will be extended until December 31. The measure reaches some 4,500 workers.

“Although it was a very useful regime, these sectors still present certain difficulties linked to competitive situations,” he said.

Before his appearance in the Integrated Budget Commission with the Treasury Commission of the Chamber of Senators, Mieres announced the sending of a bill to Parliament to extend the partial and total unemployment insurance regime, for the hotel, restaurant sector and bars; trade in general, and transport and storage.

These three items of economic activity presented, as of July 2022, the largest number of workers in partial unemployment insurance. “Although it was a very useful regime, these sectors still present certain difficulties linked to competitive situations,” he stressed at a press conference.

He added that the extension will be in force until December 31 and by then it is expected that this regime will end.

Although the exchange difference with Argentina is expected to be maintained in the coming months, Mieres estimated that the next tourist season in Uruguay could achieve competitive advantages thanks to sun and beach tourism.
