More than 2,500 flights in the United States canceled due to omicron and bad weather

Air transport continued to suffer interruptions on Saturday in the United States, after bad weather in several regions of the country added to the disturbances caused by the increase in coronavirus infections caused by the omicron variant.

As of 00:30 GMT, 2,660 flights in the United States had been canceled: more than half of the 4,617 cancellations worldwide, according to the FlightAware page.

On the other hand, 4,798 internal flights suffered delays in the country on Saturday, out of a total of 9,432 worldwide.

The most affected US airline was Skywest, which had to cancel 23% of its flight plan, according to FlightAware.

Chicago airports (north) were particularly affected by difficult weather conditions, with about half of the flights canceled. A snowstorm is expected in the region on Saturday night.

Passengers could experience a tough new day on Sunday when they return from vacation. FlightAware estimates the cancellation of 1,175 flights in the United States and 2,134 in the world.

The extremely contagious variant of the omicron coronavirus continues to disrupt global air travel.

Numerous pilots and staff members contracted COVID-19 or were in close contact with infected people, forcing companies to cancel flights due to lack of staff.

Some 7,500 flights were canceled by airlines around the world on Christmas weekend.
