The organization “DDoSecrets” (Distributed Denial of Secrets) and the platform “EnlaceHacktivista” revealed the latest leak from the group of hackers “Guacamaya”, which includes a series of police and military documents from different countries in the region. Among the leaked documents are 400,000 emails from the Joint Chiefs of Staff (EMCO) of the Chilean Armed Forces, an organization led by Division General Guillermo Paiva Hernández.
“We leak military and police systems from Mexico, Peru, Salvador, Chile, Colombia and we deliver this to those who legitimately do what they can with this information,” said the group of hackers known for leaking hidden data from a nickel mine in Guatemala. , through a statement published on September 19, the day of the Glories of the Army in Chile.
Covering more than five years of military communications, the leak would bring to light internal emails from the labor organization and permanent advice to the Minister of Defense, on matters related to the preparation and joint use of the country’s Armed Forces, in addition to meetings and reports on the military situation both in the south of Chile —where the State of Exception prevails— and in the north with the military deployment due to the migrant crisis.
Given the events, Senator Kenneth Pugh (Ind-RN), a member of the Senate National Defense Committee, told The counter that they are monitoring the situation, although he maintained that there should be no sensitive information in the leak since it is handled by other means. However, he stated that computer expertise should be done in the face of the enormous number of emails and confirmed that the authorities of the Ministry of Defense will be summoned to Congress.
“The decision was made to summon the Undersecretary of Defense Gabriel Gaspar for next Tuesday, September 27, considering the preliminary background of the leak,” said the legislator, adding that the focus will be on the discussion of the Framework Law on Cybersecurity and Critical Information Infrastructure which is in the first constitutional process.
Senator Pugh said that in a second instance, both Minister Maya Fernández and the head of EMCO will be summoned, “to expose which were the areas exposed in the leak.”
Deputy Jorge Brito (RD), a member of the House Defense Commission, also addressed the issue, stating that they are determining whether or not the leak constitutes an attack on national security.
“We are analyzing the exposed information and determining whether or not it has any relevant effect on the national defense system. We will ask the Defense Commission to meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff to analyze the state’s cyber defense capabilities,” explained the parliamentarian , in conversation with this medium.
So far, neither the Ministry of Defense nor the EMCO have commented on the massive email leak.
It is worth mentioning that “Guacamaya” is the group of hackers that was behind the data leak of “Mining Secrets”, an investigation into hidden data from a nickel mine in Guatemala. Meanwhile, DDoSecrets is known for leaking US police documents “BlueLeaks” in 2020 and for having published information from the Russian government.
