The cooperative relationship that exists between Russia and Nicaragua is considered “alarming” by the United States, even more than the rapprochement between the European country and the governments of Cuba and Venezuela.
“I think, frankly, I am more concerned about Russia and Nicaragua at this particular moment than I am about Venezuela and Cuba,” said Juan González, senior director for the Western Hemisphere at the White House National Security Council. According to him, the Cubans know that “there is a bit of a line” with the United States, and Venezuela ultimately wants the pressure of the sanctions to be eased.

“They know that becoming a, you know, military silo base for Russia would be something that would undermine their economic interests,” González said about Venezuela at the event sponsored by the US Institute of Peace, based in Washington.
A possible installation of a Russian military base in Nicaragua is something that the Joe Biden administration sees as more feasible due to Ortega’s radicalism. “The role of Russia and the activities of Russia and Nicaragua, for me, are alarming,” he reiterated.

Lawyer Juan Diego Barberena, a member of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab), believes that Ortega’s support for Russia before the international community will trigger “strong geopolitical consequences” for the Nicaraguan regime. He affirms that the dictatorship could be “certainly more isolated.”

But in addition, he underlines that the regime is endangering the country and national security because “we are going to see all these authorizations for Russian troops, even if it is for training in the national territory, they put the country in a conflict that in principle we believed was already I was overwhelmed. “Any international condemnation of the conflict in Ukraine will have consequences for the interests of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, which has supported a geostrategic and geopolitical conflict where it does not have much to support it,” says Barberena.
