The Congress of the republic held this Tuesday a solemn session for the bicentennial of its foundation, in the chamber of sessions, in which the role it has in the defense of democracy was highlighted.
The ceremony was presided over by the head of Congress, José Williams, and was attended by Vice President Dina Boluarte, who is in charge of the Presidential Office for the duration of President Pedro Castillo’s trip to the United States.
Other members of the Executive were also present, such as the Ministers of State, led by the Chief of Staff, Aníbal Torres Vásquez. Among the ministers present was Willy Huerta, head of the Interior portfolio, on whom a motion of censure was presented yesterday.
In addition, there were guests such as politicians Martha Chavez, Ántero Flores-Aráoz and Luis Gonzales Posada.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the congratulatory letter sent by President Pedro Castillo to Williams Zapata for the anniversary of Parliament was read.
“I am pleased to address you in order to extend my most sincere congratulations for the commemoration of the two hundred years of the establishment of the Congress of the Republic”, the letter reads.
During the event, speeches were made on the importance of Congress in enacting laws, political control, and representation. The floor was also given to the spokespersons of the different benches to leave a message on the occasion of the 200 years of life of the institution.
Before the ceremony a mass was held and after the session it is planned that a commemorative plaque will be unveiled for the bicentennial of this state power. Later, the youth symphony orchestra will be presented in the Raúl Porras Barrenechea hemicycle.
