A spokeswoman for the head of European diplomacy stressed that the way out to put an end to this situation must emerge within the country, through “a peaceful solution”.
“Nicaraguans must find a peaceful and diplomatic solution to their political crisis through dialogue,” they explained.
The General Assembly of the United Nations, which is being held these days in New York with the presence of leaders and other dignitaries from all over the world, could be the perfect setting to address this situation in accordance with the declarations made a few weeks ago.
However, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has admitted that this issue, for the time being, is not part of the topics that were addressed at the informal meeting of European foreign ministers that took place this Monday at the EU headquarters at the United Nations.
“I have to say that today on the foreign ministers’ agenda we have not talked about Nicaragua, but that does not mean that we do not care,” Borrell stressed when asked by the voice of america during the press conference after the meeting.
In that sense, he insisted that the Nicaraguan situation continues to be a matter of great concern for the European Union. “I’m sorry to say that Nicaragua is something that worries the European Union a lot, and for me personally, as a Spaniard, I know it very well,” he added in this regard.
Tackling the war in Ukraine, the EU’s priority
For the European body, the consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine will “occupy a prominent place on the agenda.” “The war in Ukraine has been shocking the whole world, it is not only Ukraine that is suffering from this war. The Ukrainian people are being bombarded with missiles and firearms and the rest of the world is affected by the increase in energy and food prices,” he said, emphasizing that “this is what we will try to explain” at this Summit of high level.
In this sense, Borrell assured that the EU intends to “promote international support for Ukraine” because, in his opinion, “by defending Ukraine, the principles of all the (countries) that come here to New York and that have endorsed the principles of international law, the sovereignty and independence of countries”.
Commitment to address “problems in other parts of the world”
