MIAMI, United States. — For the third time in history, Mexico reported an earthquake of great magnitude on September 19. The new earthquake, of magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter on the Mexican Pacific coast and was noticeable in several states of the country, including the capital.
The National Seismological of Mexico reported that the tremor occurred shortly after one in the afternoon in the town of Coalcomán (Michoacán), located about 59 kilometers south of the city of Colima.
Mexican authorities reported the death of a person in Colima. The country’s president himself, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed that the victim died from the fall of a fence in a shopping center in Manzanillo.
The earthquake also left numerous material damages, especially in states such as Michoacán, Guerrero and Jalisco, whose authorities have reported structural damage.
At the time of the event, a mega-earthquake drill was being carried out in the country as part of the National Civil Protection Day to improve the preparation of society in the face of these phenomena.
It is the third time in the last 37 years that Mexico has recorded an earthquake of great magnitude on September 19. In 1985, an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 affected the center, south and west of the country, causing severe damage to hundreds of buildings in the capital and completely changing the image of Mexico City. The 1985 catastrophe left economic losses of more than 4 billion dollars.
In 2017, the Aztec country suffered another earthquake of 7.1 that was noticeable in Morelos, Puebla, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Guerrero and Oaxaca.
