Powerful earthquake hits Mexico’s Pacific coast

Mexico was hit by a powerful earthquake on Monday.

Witnesses in Mexico City reported that buildings were shaking. There were no immediate reports of destruction, and the mayor of the capital reported no major damage “so far”.

However, an evacuation order for buildings in the capital has been issued, according to local reports.

Mexico’s National Seismological Service said the quake was magnitude 6.8, with an epicenter several hundred kilometers west of Mexico City.

Exactly 37 years to the day of the deadliest earthquake in Mexico

Mexican seismologists revised the quake’s magnitude to 7.4, while the US Geological Survey pegged the figure at 7.6 and said a tsunami was possible.

The quake comes on the anniversary of Mexico’s deadliest earthquake on record, when more than 5,000 deaths were recorded after the capital was hit by a magnitude 8.1 earthquake on September 19, 1985.
