Borges warns that "power without limits" is undermining democracy in the world

Julio Borges stated that democracies are being destroyed not from the outside, but from within the system and once in power, they change precepts

The politician and member of the Primero Justicia party Julio Borges warned this Sunday, September 18, that democracy in the world currently suffers from what he called a “global anti-democratic drift” and that it favors the strengthening of an “invisible enemy” such as limitless power; for which he stated that new forms must be created to defend it.

In an opinion article published on the portal InfobaeBorges describes that there are democracies, which were believed to be consolidated and strong, that have become “deficit” and consequently, the different “classifications” of this system of government have registered a degradation until reaching “brutal dictatorships”.

In his opinion, power without limits “knows no brakes, abhors constitutionalism and its derivatives such as the separation of powers, the rule of law and alternation in power” and seeks to take advantage of technologies and new trends to turn into “dogmas » what are «half-truths» that ultimately seek to consolidate an image that people trust and defend.

Julio Borges cites the book by Moisés Naím entitled “The Revenge of the Powerful”, where he assures that what is exposed there represents a “bell” of alert about all the processes that occur in the shadows of the decadent democratic systems and that more and more weaken.

«This work teaches us that democracies are no longer destroyed from the outside, with coups, military rebellions or civil wars, but now they are destroyed from within, with leaders who come to power through democratic means, but when they assume command discard all the principles of democracy to make themselves a tailor-made suit that allows them to govern without controls”, described the politician.

He insisted that the current dictatorships no longer use military green to be in power, but they do make the world see that they are governed by a democratic system even though they exercise authoritarianism internally, where elements such as populism are used as a tool in countries like Venezuela to sell phrases like the one that says that the country “fixed itself.”

Like the author, Julio Borges stressed that crime has penetrated the foundations of democracy and has corrupted it from within, as well as stressing that authoritarian governments make them uncomfortable with the presence of experts who handle data that reflect that populist policies have given poor results in one country.

“Only a combination of factors such as independence of powers, political awareness, good governance, reconnection with the aspirations of young people and strengthening of civil society will be able to create locks that serve to protect the principles of democracy,” Borges described.

The politician, who is currently in exile in Colombia, has had a critical stance against the administration of Nicolás Maduro. He is in favor of continuing with the international pressure to arrive, through democratic means, at a change of power in Venezuela since he considers that President Nicolás Maduro has usurped power since 2019.
