Ministry of Education adjusts schedule on the fly to start classes on #3Oct

The Executive changed the date established for the start of classes twice in less than a month until finally, two weeks before the start of the 2022-2023 school term, the Minister of Education announced that it will be Monday, October 3

The Minister of Education Yelitze Santaella reported on the night of Saturday 17, through her Twitter account and by the official accounts of the ministry, which was ready the new school schedule for the 2022-2023 period that marks the return to school for next Monday, October 3. The information arrives the weekend before what had been the initial date announced by Santaella herselfon August 5.

Week after week, fathers, mothers and representatives have been groping with the school directives when the official start of classes will be, in view of the imprecision on the part of the educational office of what should be the most planning period of school life. And on the other hand, the teachers have denounced that as long as the pending payments that have kept them protesting throughout the vacation period are not resolved, they will not return to the classroom.

The first ministerial announcement made during the first week of August – which set the traditional return to classes for the second half of September – coincided with the wave of protests that occurred throughout the country derived from the fractional and incomplete payment of the vacation bonus to teachers, ordered through the controversial Onapre instruction.

Representatives of the teachers’ union declared that it was unfeasible to return in September after the conflict with the Government over the implementation of the instructions that reached its peak due to the incomplete payment of their vacation bonus. In the midst of a protest in front of the Ministry of Education, on July 27, the teachers loudly warned that if they were not paid the full amount of their vacation bonus, they would not return to the classroom for the new school year.

“Now the return to classes cannot take place on September 16. Once the payment is given is when our vacations will start running. The teachers are going to join for the month of October,” said Gricelda Sánchez, union leader of the teachers’ union and director of the NGO Fordisi Venezuela.

The protests continued and even without expressly acknowledging it, three weeks after the first date announced by Santaella, there was a change of address by the ruler Nicolás Maduro, announcing that the new date for the start of the school year would be between October 5 and 12which meant a delay of 12 business days in compliance with the school schedule that establishes a minimum of 180 days of academic activities.

This date change, notified on August 27, was not reported by the head of the educational office, but rather by the Sector Vice President for Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jiménez. Nor was a specific day established, always an approximate period and without precision.

Given the passing of days and the lack of official information, the Association of Private Educational Institutes (Andiep) extended the request to the directors of private schools so that the restart of classes would be maintained for the second half of September -as it is established by the school calendar- for students of initial and primary education, and then the beginning corresponding to secondary education that must return to the classrooms on the first working day of October, as established in article 54 of the regulations of the Organic Law of Education .

In the summary school schedule presented by Minister Santaella, the adjustment of days to comply with the minimum calendar is observed on the end date of the first term, which the ministry estimates to end on Friday, December 16, before the recess for the Christmas holiday. , a date that would extend almost a week more than usual.
