The secretary of the Presidency and leader of the Aire Fresco sector of the National Party, Alvaro Delgado, closed this Sunday the congress of the National Party sector in Flores. He highlighted the leadership of President Luis Lacalle Pou and said that the government coalition must be taken care of. He added that he still nor is it time to think about candidates.
At the beginning of his closing speech, he recalled the beginning of Aire Fresco and its main objective of consolidating itself as a political alternative. He also mentioned the first candidacy of Luis Lacalle Pou in 2014 that he failed to gain access to the presidency. He said that after that the sector began to think about the 2019 elections.
He explained that there they worked with the idea that Lacalle Pou head an accumulation column, to build a government coalition. “When not everyone believed in a coalition,” he added. “In 2019 people decided to change. And that dream of Luis as president with the National Party and a coalition that supports him came true,” he said. He noted that now the sector is in another stage. “As a sector our dream is another. It is to make the best government, because if we do it, if we achieve that dream, surely we have the credit to ask for the confidence to continue the process of the governing coalition”, he indicated. “Today’s dream is to govern well. Today is the time to rule. Next year Aire Fresco will be preparing for electoral issues, ”he added.
Delgado mentioned that when the coalition took over the government it found a country worse than thought. “The country that the Broad Front left us was worse in social and economic terms. That is the reality,” he pointed out, adding that 13 days later the pandemic arrived. “We had to prioritize people. We bet on that. I am very proud of the attitude that people had during the pandemic. What I am not very proud of was the attitude that the opposition had, ”he said.
He explained that for the remaining two and a half years of government there are four fundamental actors. “One is the president. Leadership is important. He is the best and greatest political leader the country has. He is also a reference outside borders, ”he stressed. The second actor to take care of, according to his vision, is the government coalition. Third to the National Party. “You have to take care of the game. As the main actor in the coalition. The owners of the National Party are not the leaders, they are the whites, the white militants”, he stressed. In fourth place he placed Fresh air.
He said he felt proud when he saw several ministers put “the love they put into management. Commitment. That is being proudly white“, held.
In another passage, he mentioned the progress made by the government in social assistance, lower unemployment and a rebound in the economy. “We have to bet that this desire for growth, for investments, for salary recovery spills over into the people,” he said. “Not everything is fine. There are many things to improve. But most things are much better than in 2019”, he added.
At the end of his speech, he expressed that work should continue on these improvements. “And above all try to take care of the sector, the party, the coalition. Try to defend the government and that people feel the worth that it was worth changing. That is the biggest challenge”, he finished.
