LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (USA).- Biblical phrase said by Jesus on the cross when he was being crucified: “All is finished.” Saul «Cinnamon» Alvarez, like a replica in boxing, makes it clear after defeating his great enemy Gennadiy this Sunday morning at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golovkin and thus revalidate his absolute super middleweight title (168 pounds).
The relatively easy victory for the Mexican star fighter came by unanimous decision because he dominated at least nine of the 12 rounds. He improved his professional record to 58-2-2 with 39 wins by knockout.
Dave Moretti scored 116-112, David Sutherland 115-113 and Steve Weisfeld 115-113. All three in favor of the Mexican, unanimous decision.
In the first six rounds, which marked the middle of the fight, Canelo Alvarez exerted full dominance landing blows on hooks, short straights and occasionally the oppercut.
Golokin, who only suffered the second setback of his glorious career with 42 wins, one draw and 37 knockout successes, could not decipher Canelo’s fighting style in that important stretch.
The stellar boxer from Kazakhstan was slow in his hands and legs, although in rounds eight and nine he managed to land effective blows, but they did not reach the anatomy of the Mexican tetramonarch with enough force.
Throughout the fight, Canelo Alvarez was seen pressing… he always took control of the actions, while the Kazakh went back without showing any decision to hit his fists.
The Champion Assaults
However, in the so-called championship rounds, Golovkin, aware that he was down on the officials’ cards, tried – and there were times when he succeeded – to hit the low planes and the face of Canelo Alvarez.
With the resounding triumph of the four-time world champion (he has been a starter in the super welterweight, middle, super middle and light heavyweight categories), the forecast of most experts was fulfilled… and also of the bookmakers who gave as a wide favorite to the fighter from Mexico.
But the knockout was not registered, as some analysts had also predicted, for which all the credit is given to Golovkin who knew how to execute his honor and endurance capacity against a much younger rival -32 years old against 40- and to the time that he never believed he could lose the much-demanded third fight.
With this victory, in addition, the debt that was pending by Canelo Alvarez was settled.
Because in the previous two fights (mounted in September of the years 2017 and 2018), there were some unknowns.
The Mexican and the Kazakh, in the first match, tied, but in the second the victory went to the Mexican. And now, to complete the trio, Canelo Alvarez delivered and won the trophy.
Of the three brawls, two wins for Canelo Alvarez, zero for Golovkin and one draw. So, experts say, this Sunday the third “was the charm”
