COE recommends Education classes be postponed by storm Fiona

SANTO DOMINGO.- Given the probability of an impact from tropical storm Fiona, the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, suggested to the Ministry of Education to postpone the start of the 2022-2023 school year, which was scheduled for Monday, September 19.

Juan Manuel Méndez made these recommendations through his Twitter account “After having weighed with ONAMET and the other organizations the relevance of inviting classes, he understands that due to the millimeters of rain that is associated with this event, it is not possible” , said.

In relation to the labor part, the COE recommends that the Ministry of Labor wait tomorrow, Saturday, to determine the relevance or not of calling work from this Monday.

the COE issued a yellow alert for 12 provinces and an “early” green alert for 07 because the center of tropical storm Fiona is located about 215 km east of Guadeloupe in the (Lesser Antilles) and moves west about 22 km/h with maximum sustained winds estimated at about 85 km/h with higher gusts and a small change in intensity is expected in the coming days as it approaches our area.

The provinces on yellow alert are:

Samaná, La Romana, El Seibo, San Cristóbal, San Pedro de Macorís, Barahona, La Altagracia, María Trinidad Sánchez, Hato Mayor, Gran Santo Domingo, Peravia, Azua

On green alert are:

Duarte, Sánchez Ramírez, Monsignor Nouel, San José de Ocoa, San Juan, Monte Plata, La Vega

With a trajectory that suggests that this Sunday the country would be under the effects of tropical storm Fiona, several emergency agencies are already preparing to prevent the impact on the territory.

The director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez, pointed out that they activated their contingency plan for hurricanes, which includes several response agencies such as Public Health, Civil Defense, Public Works, among others.
