Why is it important for children to be able to play in outdoor parks?

A university study revealed that playing in outdoor parks and outside the home is one of the best activities children can do to develop the brain and motor skills.

The analysis highlighted that both babies and children develop their senses more with this common practice, because they have the possibility of “looking at everything, exploring every detail that catches their attention and, additionally, they improve their physical and personal development”.

Maritza Ortiz León, occupational therapist and master’s degree in education from the Manuela Beltrán University, referred to the study and pointed out that, “although children also have a lot of fun playing at home, going out to the park is a very special moment for them. They are in an environment that is not so familiar to them and they can let their imagination run wild, until they believe that they are going to live a true adventure”.

The expert also highlighted that playing in the park allows children to have more time for socialization, creativity and get some exercise.

“The senses are what give us information about the environment, help us regulate behavior and generate learning. Commonly, we know of ‘hyperactive’ children because they are the ones who are constantly on the move, we classify them without recognizing that they are needs of their sensory systems,” he said.

He added that not performing this type of practice can have harmful effects on minors. “We can see that some children are aggressive, they are annoyed by activities such as bathing, nail trimming and hair cutting, that can be attributed to tactile difficulties,” he said.

The therapist assured that “in this way we can differentiate the difficulties of the integration of the senses, difficulties that affect the processes of attention, memory, organization, self-control and self-confidence, which are the basis of learning.”

The experts concluded that it is recommended that children can access periodically to these types of activities, to develop not only their physical growthbut learning and the senses.
