The Ministry of Health (Ssa) confirmed 4,602 cases of dengue so far this year, of which 1,889 were classified as warning signs or severe dengue. The dengue panorama issued by the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE) highlights that to date eight deaths have been confirmed from the disease, while 67 percent of the cases were reported in the state of Mexico, Veracruz, Chiapas, Sonora and Tabasco .
The federal agency pointed out that the states with the highest incidence of confirmed cases per 100 thousand inhabitants are: Tabasco (20.41), Morelos (12.18), Sonora (11.85), Chiapas (9.16) and Guerrero (8.51). As for the entities with the most estimated infections, the state of Mexico, Chiapas and Sonora are joined by Oaxaca and Veracruz, which together account for 64 percent.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, oh Albopictus. There are four serotypes of the virus that causes dengue, which means that it is possible to be infected four times.
While many infections cause only a mild illness, the dengue virus can cause an acute flu-like illness. Sometimes, the disease evolves into complications that can be fatal, and for this reason it is called severe dengue.
For its part, the Ssa reported that the entities with an upward trend in estimated cases are: Chiapas, Guerrero, the state of Mexico, Oaxaca, Sonora, Tabasco and Veracruz.
By health institution, 60 percent have been treated in Ssa medical units; 24 percent in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and at least 2 percent in IMSS-Wellness hospitals.
The DGE highlighted that up to epidemiological week 36, 167 deaths from probable dengue have been reported, of which eight are confirmed, 68 are under study and 91 have been ruled out. The confirmed deaths correspond to three in Oaxaca, and one in the state of Mexico, as well as in Morelos, Sinaloa, Tabasco and Veracruz.
