Storm Fiona strengthens and will move away from Cuba

OnCubaNews

Tropical Storm Fiona has strengthened slightly since Friday night and now has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (km/h), with higher gusts, although forecasts move it away from Cuba.

Its central pressure was 1002 hectoPascal at 2:00 PM (Miami time), when it was located near latitude 16.6 north, longitude 64.1 west, south of Puerto Rico, in accordance with the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

According to the entity, Fiona is moving west at about 13 km / h, so it has slowed down, and “a movement towards the west northwest at a similar translation speed is expected to begin later today, followed by of a turn to the northwest for Sunday night.

The NHC notes that tropical storm force winds extend up to 205 km from the center, and forecast “strengthening during the next few days.” In the opinion of its specialists, “Fiona is expected to become a hurricane on Sunday or Sunday night as it moves near Puerto Rico.”

The center of the storm should move near or south of the Virgin Islands tonight, when it will begin to approach Puerto Rico tonight, to remain near or over this nation tomorrow. Already on Monday it should move near the Dominican Republic, although heading north and away from Cuba.

The foregoing is in tune with the forecasts of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (Insmet), which is tomorrow predicted that “in the next 12 to 24 hours the tropical storm will move between the west and west-northwest, slowing down its speed, and may gain a little more in organization and intensity, as it moves over or very close to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend.

However, given the position of the storm and the time of year, the Insmet Forecast Center ensures that it maintains “close monitoring of its evolution and future trajectory.”
