A 65-year-old man remained missing this Saturday night and a child under two years of age was hospitalized in intensive care in serious condition, after the sinking of a boat in which 11 people were traveling occurred in the Coronda River, in the Santa Fe department of San Jerónimoaccording to local media.
The shipwreck occurred on Friday night around 8:00 p.m. when a boat, apparently due to excess weight, flipped and all its occupants who were not wearing life jackets fell into the water.
Juan Ñañe, a resident of Barrio La Cuarta and a fisherman, told the newspaper El Litoral that he heard the cries for help from the other side of the island. He recounted: “I grab the boat, I’m going to paddle, rowing, there were people, the boat had foundered. I assisted the two-year-old baby who was on the other side of the ravine”.
Then, the man explained: “I brought it, I gave it to the Prefecture, I went to look for other people, who did not have life jackets, it was at night I brought them, I went to look for the belongings that sank, the boat sank and we did not find the man who is still missing.”
As for the cause of the shipwreck, Ñañe said: “the boy told me that there was a lot of weight, they had already left like that. It was a Rio Grande type helmet, a short canoe style.”
And he added: “The neighbors began to shout, I approached and the people were on the other side. A man signaled to me that there was a lady with a little boy. I told him to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and then I arrived, it was a desperate moment.
While other neighbors notified the Prefecture who rescued the rest of the people due to the accident that occurred in areas of the islands, in the vicinity of the Regatas club in the city of Coronda.
The Prefecture continued tonight in the search for the man in the place where the boat sank and in the area of islets.
Meanwhile, according to the media outlet Aires de Santa Fe, the a one-year-old and nine-month-old baby remained hospitalized in serious condition been at Orlando Alassia Children’s Hospital.
According to the authorities, the patient was admitted with a picture of drowning and he remained in intensive care, with mechanical ventilation and his lower airways were compromised, so his prognosis was reserved.
