The Forest Products Laboratory (LPF) of the Brazilian Forestry Service (SFB), linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, has open enrollment for the selection of university students to participate in the SFB’s Institutional Scientific Initiation Scholarship Program (PIBIC/ SFB). Those selected will work on the development of a research project, in Brasília (DF), which should be completed by August 2023.

The program offers a monthly allowance in the amount of R$ 400 to selected scholars. This year, PIBIC/SFB has financial support from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and, for the first time, from the Forest Technology and Geoprocessing Foundation (Funtec-DF).
PIBIC is focused on undergraduate students’ scientific initiation. It is an instrument to encourage university education, privileging the active participation of students in research projects with outstanding scientific merit.
The projects that will be developed this year are the manufacture of xylophones with wood from forest concessions; natural durability of six species of wood from the Tapajós National Forest subjected to the attack of two rotting fungi; performance of 40 Amazonian timber species submitted to lathe tests; in vitro test of the inhibitory action of extractives from 7 Amazonian wood species from the Jacundá National Forest on xylophagous fungi; DPPH method for analysis of antioxidant activity of wood extractives and Artemia salina assay for analysis of toxicity of wood extractives.
