Prince Charles pays tribute to human rights defenders

London, UK | AFP | Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, paid tribute on Saturday, on the occasion of the New Year, to the defenders of “freedom” and “human rights” in the face of “persecution” in countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.

“As we begin the new year, let us take a moment to remember the many people around the world who defend freedom and human rights,” the Prince of Wales said in a message released on the occasion of the New Year.

“In places like Afghanistan, Syria and Burma, among others, the threats and reality of persecution and political and religious insecurity go hand in hand with an increasingly disastrous humanitarian situation,” he added.

“In the face of adversity, incredibly brave people, local communities and international organizations respond to great needs by providing vital assistance,” he stressed. And he affirmed that he prays “for a peaceful solution to these conflicts.”

Prince Charles, 73, takes over from Elizabeth II, 95, of whom he reigned for 70 years and who is gradually retiring to take care of his health, performing multiple official functions, both in the United Kingdom and abroad .
