The Permanent Commission of Indigenous Peoples of the National Assembly (AN) will advance in the consolidation of three bills, in the second period of sessions that begins next Thursday. These initiatives are aimed at deepening the rights of indigenous communities, according to a press release from the Venezuelan parliament.

According to published information, these are the Law on Political Participation of Indigenous Peoples, the Law on Special Jurisdiction for Indigenous Peoples and the Law on Ancestral Wisdom of Indigenous Peoples, whose projects are advanced in their articles to be completed. in the coming months.

Regarding the Draft Law on Ancestral Wisdom of Indigenous Peoples, there are already eight articles and its objective is to preserve and develop positive measures aimed at the ancestral wisdom of these peoples.

To consolidate this proposal, the commission will complement its work with guidance from experts in the field and will publicize and disseminate the difference between bilingual intercultural education and the education of indigenous peoples, issues demanded by this sector for incorporation into the law. .

territorial deployment

During the first period of ordinary sessions, the Permanent Commission of Indigenous Peoples installed territorial teams in all the indigenous communities and communal organizations of the country, for the promotion and dissemination of the laws sanctioned and approved in the first discussion by the AN in the years 2021 and 2022.

The members of the commission highlighted that despite the economic blockade and the coercive measures implemented by the Government of the United States (USA), the territorial teams managed to promote and disseminate most of the laws worked on.

In addition, they pointed out that 19 of these correspond to the regulation of the so-called economic, social, cultural and environmental rights; 14 focused on the justice system; 10 with an impact on civil and political rights; while seven are laws approving agreements or conventions of international cooperation.

Agreements

This commission consolidated in the first period of ordinary sessions the approval of various agreements in the Plenary Chamber, such as the commemoration of the National Day of Afro-Venezuelans, the commemoration of World Africa Day and the agreement commemorating the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, among others.

Abya Yala University

He highlighted the fact that the commission met in the Cueva del Cacique Guaicaipuro, located in the La Matica sector of Los Teques, Miranda state, where they evaluated the importance of sacred sites and the creation of the René Yekwana Matubiniyo Cultural Center and the future Abya Yala University. of the Great Cacique Guaicaipuro Anti-imperialist Peoples.

The vice president of the parliamentary body, deputy Nicia Maldonado, commented that the cultural center and future university is one of the first facilities of this type being built in Latin America, whose work will include a theme park and 40 homes for indigenous communities on land sacred of Guaicaipuro.
