Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader demanded this Thursday that the international community take measures to resolve the crisis in Haiti, after assuring that the country cannot wait any longer, because thousands of human beings are dying in that impoverished nation.

The head of state spoke during the meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), headed by its secretary general, Luis Almagro.

“Haiti cannot wait any longer, thousands of people are dying, so we demand that the different states take real measures to confront the situation in Haiti,” Abinader told the OAS Permanent Council, whose meeting was held in Washington, the United States capital.

Abinader He also asked the regional body to take urgent measures to prevent the trafficking of illegal weapons that end up in the hands of armed groups operating in that country.

“It is impossible to deny the danger that a State does not have control and monopoly of force over its territory represents. We face the real possibility that criminal gangs operating in Haiti will try to transgress territorial integrity and try to disrupt public order and security in our country,” added Abinader.

He added that Dominicans are suffering the impact of the problems generated by the crisis in the neighboring country, the poorest in the Americas, where armed groups control much of that nation.

“The Dominican Republic faces a unique situation internally, unique in the hemisphere. We are referring to the impact that the prolonged crisis in the Republic of Haiti has on our economy, our security, and our social stability. The effects of the crisis in that country exceed our individual capacity and constitute a threat to the stability and security of the entire region », he said.

He assured that for the Dominican Republic, the solution of the problems in that nation is a matter of national security.

“For the Dominican Republic, it is a matter of national security. I want to repeat it so that it is recorded in the memory of this solemn session in the Hall of the Americas: the crisis that overflows Haiti’s borders is a threat to the national security of the Dominican Republic,” he said.

He argued that for a long time, the transit of people and goods from our country to Haiti has been “extremely risky.”

Abinader promised that the Dominican Government will do everything in its power to guarantee the peace and security of its citizens.

“That is why we have started the construction of a perimeter fence in the most vulnerable and sensitive areas. In addition, we have taken measures to prohibit the entry into our country of individuals associated with these groups, and those who deliberately threaten our stability, “recalled the president.

The Dominican government recently prohibited the entry to its territory of the former foreign minister, Clude Joseph, who has launched harsh attacks against the Dominican Republic for alleged racist mistreatment of Haitian citizens.
