Cuban regime denies repressive wave on the island after US accusations

Cuba, Estados Unidos

MIAMI, United States. – One of the deputy ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, denied this Thursday the wave of repression unleashed on the island, after the United States government blamed its policy towards Cuba on the increase in state repression.

“To sustain its abusive policy against Cuba and the Cuban people, the US Government alleges a wave of repression by the Cuban Government without evidence or fact to support it. Certainly, with no way to prove that it is harsher than the repression in the US or some of its closest allies,” Fernández de Cossío wrote on Twitter.

This Wednesday, A spokesman for the US government assured that Washington’s policy towards Cuba was not the same as at the time of the “thaw” carried out by Barack Obama due to the repression unleashed by the Cuban regime.

“On Cuba, our policy is based on the aspirations of the Cuban people for more freedom and more democracy,” said the spokesman for the US Department of State, Ned Price, at a press conference. reported by the EFE agency.

The official also said: “It is true that the policy of this Administration is not identical” to that of the Obama administration, when Biden was vice president.

“It is also true that since 2017, five years ago, the Cuban regime has become much more repressive in many aspects,” he added.

Price used the example of the repression unleashed by the regime against the protesters of July 11 and 12, 2021, who, who were placated with “repression, arrests and imprisonment throughout the Island.”

“This is just one example of the repression that we have been seeing from the Cuban regime,” Price said.

In another sense, he also said that the current Administration had taken “steps” for the benefit of the population of the Island.

On that date, the Biden administration also announced the resumption of the family reunification program suspended for years.

In this way, and as he promised in his campaign for the presidency, Joe Biden reversed several measures adopted by former President Donald Trump, which tightened the embargo imposed on the Island regime.

According to a government official consulted by the miami heraldthe new measures took into account the review of US policy towards Cuba announced by the White House.

“Our policy continues to focus on human rights, empowering the Cuban people to determine their own future, and these are practical measures aimed at addressing the humanitarian situation and migratory flows,” the official said.
