Travelers to Cuba will now be able to bring meat, milk and cheese

Viajeros a Cuba ahora podrán llevar carnes, leche y quesos

The Cuban regime will now allow travelers to Cuba to enter the island meat, sausages, preserves, milk and cheese.

In Cuba there is a deep food shortage and prices become prohibitive for most Cubans. This, after the uncontrollable inflation and the rapid devaluation of the peso against the dollar and the euro.

Faced with this economic crisis, the government, once again, reaches out to Cubans who live outside the country, authorizing travelers to Cuba and natural persons the importation of fresh, frozen, dehydrated or semi-processed meat, such as hamburgers and mincemeat.

The Cuban dictatorship, unable to develop its capacity to produce food and essential products, seeks relief from the situation by relying on those who travel to the island, to cover the shortages.

The government, just in August, had prohibited the importation of these foods, but now it is backing down. A resolution of September 5, released this Tuesday, the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Center for Animal Health also authorizes the import of ham, sausages, salami, preserves, powdered milk, fluid milk, dairy desserts and cheeses.

The new provision sets several limitations for travelers to Cuba who wish to enter these products. First of all, they are packaged. Second, that they are from recognized brands. And finally that they come from Spain, the United States, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

In July the government had authorized the importation of food, medicine and hygiene without limit and without cost.

The island is experiencing the worst food shortage in the last three decades.
