Ministry of Economy: industrial sector with good performance

The Ministry of EconomyPlanning and Development reported yesterday that the industry sector exhibited a good performance, experiencing positive year-on-year variations in its exports and an increase in loans in foreign currency, according to the Sectorial Panorama report corresponding to July 2022.

The report reports that local manufacturing exports amounted to 195.7 million dollars, for a year-on-year increase of 54.1%.

It details that this performance is mainly explained by the incidence of liquefied petroleum natural gas (27.3 pp), cane sugar (17.6 pp), plastic tableware (2.8 pp) and wheat flour (2.6 pp), among others.

Import

The report maintains that national manufacturing imports amounted to 2,225.9 million dollars, for a year-on-year increase of 31.9%. Of these, 175.3 million dollars corresponded to imports of capital goods, which presented an interannual variation of 18.4%.

Regarding total exports under the free zone regime, it establishes that they registered an interannual growth of 3.8%, standing at 647.8 million dollars. Likewise, it adds that foreign sales of manufacturing products registered a value 3.7% above that shown in July 2021.

Despite the price increases reflected in the cost indices during July, the sector shows sustained growth since the recovery from the pandemic, the report indicates.

It indicates that deflated sales experienced a variation of 15.9% compared to the same month of the previous year.

A dynamic sector

In the services sector, tourism continues its dynamism by receiving 591.1 thousand non-resident foreigners, equivalent to 178.9 thousand additional tourists compared to July of the previous year. It adds that tourists from North America, specifically from the United States, exceeded the visits observed by 15.6% compared to those registered prior to the pandemic.

It emphasizes that so far this year, the country has received 3.5 million non-resident foreigners, which translates into 1.8 million additional tourists to those received in January-July 2021.

The publication details that there were year-on-year increases in the arrival of Canadian nationals (30,476), Puerto Ricans (18,827), English (17,729), Argentines (17,411), Chileans (13,830), among others.

The report points out that the deflated total sales of the commercial activity registered an increase of 4.0 billion pesos when compared to July 2021, which is equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 2.7%. It stands out that this behavior is explained by the increase in fuel trade (11.6%).

In another aspect, it maintains that in July 2022 a total of 2,220,032 active workers were registered in the Dominican Social Security System, due to the incorporation of more than 149,000 formal employees in the last 12 months. In relation to the month of June, an increase of 9,505 formal workers was registered.
