A nurse from Guantanamo, a new victim of sexist violence in Cuba

Nurse Zoila Chacón was murdered on September 9, allegedly by her husband, a source close to the victim confirmed to 14ymedio. The reason for the death had already been highlighted by friends on social networks.

A co-worker at the Eusebio Hernández Maternal and Child Hospital, where Chacón worked, explained to this newspaper that the victim, the mother of two minor children, had relationship problems with her partner.

Originally from Guantánamo, Chacón moved to Havana last April to work at the hospital formerly known as Maternidad Obrera de Marianao, where she was part of the nursing and obstetrics team, according to her Facebook profile.

Without specifying the cause of his death, the Hospital Eusebio Hernández dedicated condolences noting that “no one will be able to change the harsh reality of your departure”. “The pain multiplies in each partner you leave without saying goodbye. Today we can only tell you: Thank you for the beautiful trail of memories you leave us! You will live forever in this place that you made yours and from which you will never leave completely, “he wrote in a September 12 post.

Between heartfelt condolences and greetings to the grieving family, users on social networks assure that Chacón is one more victim of violence against women. in your profileDanger Herrera confirmed that the death occurred on September 9: “My friend, you are one of the unforgettable ones, I still can’t believe what happened, my eyes are a valley of tears because of your absence.”

another user, Martha Celiastated that Chacón was “an excellent mother, excellent daughter, sister, niece, friend, companion, neighbor and an excellent person.”

“Perhaps for all these reasons I can’t believe it’s you. Why you? I wonder all the time. Who will call my son Cristinito like you did, who will call me from the first floor as soon as you came to visit from Havana,” she wrote in a Facebook post accompanied by several photos of Chacón dressed as a nurse and her candle.

According to statistics kept by the independent organization Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba, sexist violence has claimed at least 25 victims so far this year, in addition to five other frustrated assassination attempts.

The platform, which warns of the underreporting of its data, has warned on numerous occasions of the need to create an official census to detect the seriousness of the problem. In the three years since its foundation, the group has not stopped demanding a comprehensive law that guarantees the prevention of this type of violence and the protection of its victims.
