During the 2018 protests, the late mayor was pointed out on social media for directing and paying vigilante groups with municipal funds, promoting clashes between Sandinista militants and opponents who were marching civically. According to Open Urnas, the Sandinista mayor, together with Mayor Mariano Madrigal, from Jinotepe, directed the massacre in Carazo.

The November municipal elections are pointed out as fraudulent by opponents, after the Sandinista Front competes with so-called collaborationist parties, which are subject to the designs of the red and black party.
