In the second quarter of the year, the productive activity of eight regions fell, while the country advanced 3.3%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
Apurimac was the one that registered the greatest drop with a decrease of 33.1%, due to the paralysis of The Bambas occurred from April 20 to June 10.
Moquegua, for its part, fell 3.2%, explained by the lower volumes of copper and molybdenum extraction affected by the stoppage of Cuajone from February 28 to April 22.
Other areas of the country that also showed negative results were Amazonas (-2.8%), Tacna (-2.7%), Pasco (-2.4%), Huancavelica (-1.3%), Piura (-1.2%) and La Libertad (-0.9 %).
The chief economist of the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE), Víctor Fuentesexplained that previously the good price of metals helped mining activity, and therefore some regions.
However, he commented that now, with lower prices, there are “less prospects for investment” and this happens in a context in which no work is being done to solve social conflict.
“Not only does the conflict continue, but it deteriorates. It sets a bad precedent for mining competitiveness,” he added.
Data
-Ica was the region with the highest growth in the second quarter, with an increase of 11.7%, driven by mining activity and the higher volume of copper extracted.
-As for the department of Lima, production increased by 3.4%.
