More than a thousand peasants demand that the authorities comply with an agreement that had been signed in March of this year. Only in the course of this afternoon will there be concrete news.
The peasants of the National Intersectoral Coordination demand that food kits be delivered as well as technology, seeds and supplies and to fund the accompaniment of peasants. They mention that the authorities failed to comply with an agreement signed at the beginning of the year.
After a meeting that took place with some authorities during the afternoon of yesterday, an intermediate room was declared until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Interior Minister Federico Gonzalez said at a press conference that although they promised to help, they will now analyze what they can accomplish based on the available budget. “We agreed to go ahead with what was agreed in these months, to comply, but always in accordance with the real possibilities of the Government and the various institutions.”
However, González pointed out that they do not promise anything but they will try to comply with the points already established. The minister also assured that the pandemic brought with it strong blows and that makes it difficult to comply with the agreements.
In front of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, a large number of peasants were stationed claiming that they had been promised the delivery of 20,000 food kits, which have not been delivered to date. In another question, they mention the slow budget execution by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock aimed at providing assistance to small producers, as well as the assistance of the state in the face of the drought situation that the Paraguayan Chaco is going through.
The National Police accompanies these marches in order to try to avoid major inconveniences in the streets of Asunción. Commissioner Daniel Careaga, general director of Asunción, mentioned that the protesters did not currently cause any kind of problems. “They did not present problems, Yegros street is the one that is blocked, but the traffic is being monitored by the police, in fact, they wanted to carry out a march, but the situation was explained to them and they understood perfectly,” said the commissioner. In turn, Careaga mentioned that the peasants simply come to demand that the agreement that was already reached at the beginning of this 2022 be fulfilled.
TRUCKS
Drivers from these unions, in turn, continue with their demands to reduce fuel costs in various parts of the country and mentioned that if they do not get results soon, they will come again to Asunción to “make themselves felt.”
The demonstrations began on Monday and several unions joined the demands; platform drivers, taxi drivers, school carriers, motorcycle delivery, among others. All of them demand the reduction of G. 1,500 to end their demonstrations.
Yesterday in the South Access area there were some frictions between the protesters and some police officers since the drivers were intermittently closing the route for certain periods of time and that somehow hindered traffic in general. In turn, in the city of Itá there was a confrontation between truckers and police officers and apparently there were some injured after the disputes.
For his part, the head of Petropar, Denis Lichi, declared that in the fortnight of October some discounts would be given to the extent possible since new batches of products will be received.
