China opens its embassy in Nicaragua

China opens its embassy in Nicaragua

China inaugurated its embassy in Nicaragua on Friday, three weeks after the restoration of bilateral diplomatic relations after Managua’s break with Taiwan.

The flag of China was raised for the first time in 31 years in a special ceremony held at the new diplomatic headquarters, located on the outskirts of Managua, to the rhythm of Yiyongjun Jinxingqu (March of the volunteers), the Chinese anthem.

The event was chaired by the representative of China, Yu Bo, with the presence of the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada Colindres, and the Presidential Investment Advisor, Laureano Ortega, son of the Nicaraguan ruler, Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo.

“We enter this new era of relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Nicaragua, convinced that our cooperation will benefit our peoples, drawing closer and collaborating to grow together,” said Ortega Murillo, during the opening of the embassy.

They reject “interference”

In his speech, Yu Bo pointed out that “it is imperative to adhere to multilateralism and oppose foreign interference in the internal affairs of other countries in the name of so-called democracy and human rights.”

“China has been a staunch defender of the common values of humanity. Both the Chinese Government and the Nicaraguan Government share the same or similar positions on important international and multilateral affairs, ”said the Chinese representative.

He added that “both parties firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, reject foreign interference and insist on their own development path in accordance with national conditions.”

Foreign Minister Moncada commented that “both peoples and governments have developed our relations based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law of mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs.”

Break with Taiwan

Nicaragua reestablished relations with China on December 9, immediately after it broke ties with Taiwan, an island that Beijing considers a rebellious province.

On December 27, the Nicaraguan Government reported that all the assets that the Government of Taiwan had in the country remained “with absolute and unrestricted ownership of the domain” of China, as a result of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

The Government of Taiwan announced on December 30 that it will “take” international legal actions against the State of Nicaragua, for the “confiscation” of the Taiwanese embassy in Managua, carried out by the Administration of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to deliver it to Mainland China.

Nicaragua’s relations with China and Taiwan have been intermittent throughout history, but since 1990 the Central American country was close to the island, which in the last three years had positioned itself as the main cooperative and one of the most important commercial partners. important of the Central American country.

The last time Nicaragua maintained diplomatic relations with China was between 1985 and 1990, under Ortega’s first term.

Nicaragua chose to recognize China after the Organization of American States (OAS) questioned the legitimacy of the general elections in which Ortega was re-elected as president, and after announcing that he was withdrawing the country from the body.
