The Martí Theater, a majestic space that owes so much to Leal in its conservation, returned to welcome the public after four months of intense restoration work, mainly in the carpentry, roofs and false ceilings, after the fatal explosion in the Havana hotel that It cost the lives of 47 people.

Notable patrimonial objects also suffered, such as the painting with the image of the Cuban National Hero José Martí, which was exhibited in the lobby of the theater, and which received several impacts and inlays of glass and solid materials, as a result of the blast wave.

The canvas required extensive restoration work in the easel painting workshop of the Office of the City Historian, and now returns to its usual position in the enclosure.

Although the results of the investigations have not yet been revealed, the official hypothesis indicates that the explosion was the product of a liquefied gas leak that occurred when a tanker truck was filling a tank with that fuel, located in the upper part of the building. .
