Cuban judoka Idelannis Gómez won the title in the 70 kg and placed Cuba in sixth place in the medal table of the Pan American Open in Santo Domingo, in which 190 representatives from 18 countries competed this weekend.

Cuba won a bronze medal on Sunday with Omar Cruz (+100 kg), to which was added fifth place on Saturday by Blanca Cabrera (52 kg). On the day Kimy Bravo (66 kg) lost in her first fight.

Ahead of the four Cubans (1-0-1) were the Dominican Republic (5-1-4), leader of the competition, followed by Venezuela (3-0-3), Colombia (2-3-5), Mexico (2-2-5) and the United States (1-0-1), the six nations with at least one of the 14 crowns in dispute.

Gómez advanced at an Ippon pace to the final and won against Colombian Luisa Bonilla, with previous victories against Mexican Leilie Villareal and Canadian Laurence Biron, in the quarterfinal and semifinal stages, respectively.

In the opinion of specialists, the young Cuban judoka, monarch of the 1st Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe 2022, has shown a rise in her sports career. Recently, she won the silver medal in a youth tournament in this same Dominican capital.

The super heavyweight Cruz also debuted with Ippon against the Costa Rican Issac Meléndez, but in the semifinals he fell in the same way against the Chilean Francisco Solís. For her part, Blanca lost in the discussion of the bronze with a backhand by Ippon against the Mexican Paulina Martínez.
