The latest invention of the Cuban Government in the face of the shortage of eggs: raise quail instead of chickens

The Cuban government intends to “incorporate” quail meat and eggs into the diet of Cubans, according to official television on Monday. The objective, in his words, is to achieve “food sovereignty”, the euphemism that is often used as a synonym for scarcity, which is growing every day.

A few days ago, a reportage in Perlavision He anticipated that in Cienfuegos the production of this bird is increasing. Specifically, in the Primero de Enero Base Business Unit, in the Cienfuegos municipality of Palmira, they claim to currently have 39,000 animals, which they hope will reach 60,000 before the end of this year.

The employees of the Provincial Poultry Company explain that each quail lays between 280 and 300 eggs a year, while a hen lays between 240 and 250 pieces in the same period.

Cubans on the street continue to object. A young man from Havana, sentenced: “That does not pay, he is very small”

Similarly, they emphasize that quail are very precocious and can lay eggs from 45 days of age – while for hens you have to wait six months – that “it is easy to breed, with a good temperament” and that feeding them is cheaper : with what a hen feeds three quails are satisfied.

Cubans have been seeing for some time, not without surprise, that both on the black market and on websites on-line Home delivery companies sell these eggs, while they watch the chicken eggs disappear. “Small but tasty, ideal for boiling and placing in a salad, but of course, impossible for an omelet,” describes a resident of Central Havana who has bought them for 300 pesos a carton with 30 units of quail eggs.

The official media are full of praise for the product: “Although a third smaller, it has the same kilocalories, the same fat and exceeds it in protein.” In addition, it contributes less to cholesterol levels, “it is much more nutritional, it has greater digestibility and increases hemoglobin.”

Faced with this, Cubans on the street continue to object. A young man from Havana sentenced: “That doesn’t work, he’s very small.”
